Question
What is the ruling on having a caesarean section without a need for it but only to save the mother the pains of giving birth normally?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
It is known to us that physicians are the ones who decide the best means of giving birth and that they do not resort to caesarean sections except when there is a necessity for it. If the condition does not require it, then they prefer natural births. Accordingly, we advise you to let them decide this matter. If they choose the caesarean section, then the matter is settled. However, if there is no need for it, then it seems that it is not permissible for the harms that may result from it.
