Marrying Fornication Partner Not Condition of Repentance

Question

I am an unmarried twenty-one-year old woman, and I fornicated with one young man and then again with another. What should I do to repent from these sins that I am no longer able to live with? Should I marry one of these two young men so as to expiate for my sin?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Verily, you have committed a grave sin and one of the most hideous and destructive wrongdoings, may Allah safeguard us. You should turn to Allah, the Exalted, in sincere repentance and observe all of its due conditions. You should give up the sin, resolve never to commit it again in the future, and feel remorse for having committed it. Moreover, you should adhere in upholding the Islamic sharia and carry out more righteous deeds, which wipes out sins and wrongdoings. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. It should be noted that marrying one of the men with whom you fornicated is not a condition for the validity of your repentance. However, if one of them happened to propose to you in marriage, then it is permissible for you to marry him.

Allah knows best.
