Conditions for Permissibility of Heart Implants

Question

What is the religious opinion regarding heart implants and transplanting pig organs onto humans?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

First, a heart transplant is permissible provided that the following conditions are fulfilled:

1. The benefit of the heart implant should outweigh any harm that befalls the person who will undergo the surgery.

2. The person from whom the heart is taken should not be alive because this would result in his death.

3. The donor should willingly give his consent to donating his heart before his death. Otherwise, the consent of his heir, or the Muslim ruler if the deceased has no heirs or his identity is unknown, should be sought.

This is a brief account on the due conditions that should be fulfilled as underlined by the Islamic Fiqh Academy in this regard.

As for the second question, transplanting pig organs onto humans is impermissible unless there is a considerable sharia-approved necessity for it and there are no pure animals from which the organs in question can be taken.

Allah knows best.
