The cause of the misguidance of the Jinn

Question

Human beings commit sins by the insinuations and whispers of devils while we do not see them. Consequently, the Jinn must be righteous for they see devils or because there is no one who can misguide them. Then they have to have the best kind of belief in Allaah The Almighty. So, how can they be led astray and be disbelievers?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Actually, misguidance has many reasons:

First, it can stem from the fancies of the soul which is a persistent enjoiner of evil. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil.} [Quran 12:53]

Second, It can be due to bad companions. As is reported in the Hadeeth (narration): “A man is on the (same) path of his companions, so one of you should consider whom he takes as a companion.” [Abu Daawood and Al-Albaani: Saheeh]

Third, it can be due to the heedlessness and deception by the worldly pleasures. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {O company of Jinn and mankind, did there not come to you messengers from among you, relating to you My verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "We bear witness against ourselves"; and the worldly life had deluded them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.} [Quran 6:130]

In fact, the misguidance of the Jinn is not connected to Satan and that is for several reasons:

1. At-Tabari may Allaah have mercy upon him reported in his Tafseer, that Qataadah may Allaah have mercy upon him mentioned in his Tafseer the verse where Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord Said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood.} [Quran 2:30], that the Jinn have caused corruption on earth before Satan had influence on people or the intention strongly to misguide people.

2. Satan intended strongly to mislead humans and he asked Allaah The Almighty to delay him in order to achieve this, as Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And [mention] when We Said to the angles, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He said, "Should I prostrate to one You created from clay?" [Iblees] said, "Do You see this one whom You have honored above me? If You delay me until the Day of Resurrection, I will surely destroy his descendants, except for a few.} [Quran 17:61-62]

3. The misguidance of the Jinn is affirmed with full certainty by several evidences, including the verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says in Chapter Al-Jinn (what means): {And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.} [Quran 72:11] , {And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allaah], and among us are the unjust.} [Quran 72:14]

Imaam Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him classified a chapter for the reward and the punishment of the Jinn and he named it ‘The Jinn: Their Rewards and Punishment’. He also mentioned a great deal of evidence on this subject.

Allaah Knows best.
