Explanation of Qur'anic verses (12:107-111)

Question

Please explain Surah Yusuf verses 107-111. Especially the verse in which Allah Said that the earlier Prophets were thinking that they might have heard wrong about the punishment of Allah on Kafirs, when the punishment was delayed on them).

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. We report to you the conclusion of the interpretation of these verses from the words of most eminent interpreters Imams Tabari and Ibn Katheer . As for Allah's Saying, {Do they then feel secure from the coming against them of the covering veil of the Torment of Allâh, or of the coming against them of the (Final) Hour, all of a sudden while they perceive not?}[12: 107]. In his interpretation to this verse (sign), Tabari says, 'Allah Says "Those who don't confess that Allah is their God and they worship others making partners with Him, do they not fear the coming against them of the covering veil of the Torment of Allah. Do they not expect that the Day Judgment comes suddenly while they are still polytheists and disbelievers. Those will stay forever in (Hell), while they don't know whether this Day has come or not' . Concerning His Saying: {Say (O Muhammad SAW): "This is my way; I invite unto Allâh (i.e. to the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me (also must invite others to Allâh, i.e. to the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) with sure knowledge. And Glorified and Exalted be Allâh (above all that they associate as partners with Him). And I am not of the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh, those who worship others along with Allâh or set up rivals or partners to Allâh)."}[12: 108]. Imam Tabari says in his interpretation (May God have mercy upon him), 'Allah Says (interpretation of meaning) to His Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam), Oh, Muhammad say, this is the way which I adopt. It is a call to Islamic Monotheism and sincerity in worship to Allah, not to call gods and idols, and to obey and not to rebel against Him. This is my way and my mission. I call (invite) to one God Who has no partners, but with sure knowledge and conviction. Those who follow and believe me also call to it with sure knowledge. I also invite to it with foresight those who followed me to believe me. Glory to God, Allah Says God has no partners in His dominion or anyone else worshipped; I'm not a polytheist. He Says I'm innocent of the polytheists. I am not one of them' . As for His Saying, {And We sent not before you (as Messengers) any but men, whom We inspired from among the people of townships. Have they not travelled through the earth and seen what was the end of those who were before them? And verily, the home of the Hereafter is the best for those who fear Allâh and obey Him (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds, and by performing righteous good deeds). Do you not then understand?}[12: 109]. Imam Tabari says: 'Allah (Glory to God) Says Oh, Muhammad, We did not send before you, except (but) men, neither women nor angels inspired with Our signs. We also sent them to call for Our obedience and worship Us only. Townships means people who live in towns and countries, not the nomads (people who live in deserts) (desert dwellers)' . Qatadah says, 'We didn't send before you but inspired men from the townships because they were more knowing and wiser than the nomad' . However, His Saying, {(They were reprieved) until, when the Messengers gave up hope and thought that they were denied (by their people), then came to them Our Help, and whomsoever We willed were delivered. And Our Punishment cannot be warded off from the people who are Mujrimûn (criminals, disobedients to Allâh, sinners, disbelievers, polytheists).}[12: 110]. Tabari interprets it saying, 'Oh, Muhammad , haven't those polytheists, who deny your Prophethood and what you have come with such as Islamic Monotheism and purifying the obedience and worship for Allah alone. Do they not walk in the earth and think about how was the end of those people before them, who belied Our Messenger. Haven't We inflicted on them Our punishment and rescued Our Messengers and followers? Won't they ponder over that and draw leasers from that?' . In his interpretation of this sign (verse) Imam Ibn Katheer said, 'Allah reminds that He brings down his victory (support) on His Messengers (Peace be upon them all) during times of distress and when waiting for relief from Allah in greater needs' . As for His Saying, {Indeed in their stories, there is a lesson for men of understanding. It (the Qur'an) is not a forged statement but a confirmation of the Allâh's existing Books [the Taurât (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel) and other Scriptures of Allâh] and a detailed explanation of everything and a guide and a Mercy for the people who believe.}[12: 111]. In his interpretation (explanation) of this verse, Imam Tabari (May God have mercy upon him) says, 'Allah Says: There was a lesson in Yusuf 's and his brothers' story for the people of intellects and minds and a preachment and warning. Because Allah, The Great and Almighty, after Yusuf had been thrown into the well to die, and after he had been sold as a slave for low price, and after long imprisonment and captivity, gave him (bestowed) on him the ownership of Egypt and enabled him in the earth and raised him over his brothers who oppressed him. Allah also reunite him with his parents and brothers by His Omnipotence after this long period and brought them from long distances. Allah Tells the Quraish polytheists: "There is a lesson for you, O! People, in the stories of Yusuf and his brothers, if you understand. There had been a lesson in their story if you understood. We are sure that what had happened to Yusuf and his brothers, could happen to Muhammad ( sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )). Then He will send him out and grant him victory over you and enable him in the earth, support him with soldiers, followers and companions, even though he passed through distress and the days, nights and epochs were so cruel' . Allah knows best.
