Question:

Assalaamu alaykum. Do you know of any scholar who has said that praying the ‘Asr after the length of an object's shadow becomes twice the height of the object will not be accepted (it is as good as not praying at all)?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

This is not a statement of any scholar. The time of the ‘Asr prayer extends until sunset.

Once the shade of something becomes twice its height, it is the time of necessity, according to the Hanbali School. According to the Hanbali scholars, the prayer is valid at this time and is considered performed at its due time, but if someone delays the prayer until this time without a sound reason, he is sinful, according to them.

However, according to the view of the majority of the scholars, he is not sinful. For more benefit, please refer to fatwa 84538.

Allah knows best.
