She performed ‘Umrah during her menses

Question

I intended to perform ‘Umrah with my husband last Ramadan, but I was surprised by the monthly menses on the day of travelling. At the miqat (place of assuming the Ihram [sacred state]), I padded the place of blood with handkerchiefs and said: "Labbayk Allaahumma ‘Umrah", hoping that the blood would stop, but it did not stop. I performed tawaf (circumambulation) seven times around the Ka‘bah, with this blood, but I did not pray behind the maqaam of Ibraaheem (spot where Prophet Abraham stood). Then, I performed sa‘y (going back and forth between Mount Safa and Mount Marwahh) four times, but I did not complete Sa‘y. I know that I made many mistakes. I regretted this badly and repented to Allah. I want to know what I should do to expiate these sins so that Allah would forgive me and be pleased with me. I wish that your eminence clarify for me what I should do.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The honorable questioner should repent to Allah Almighty and frequently seek forgiveness for the grave errors that she committed against herself and for her carelessness about the commands of Allah Almighty.

Every person who is competent for religious assignment should learn the rulings of any act of worship before starting to perform it. If he starts it, he should complete and perfect it. Allah Almighty says (what means): {And complete the Hajj and ‘Umrah for Allah.} [Quran 2: 196]

To answer the question, we say that the questioner has to return to Makkah to repeat her ‘Umrah because purity from major and minor impurities is a condition for the validity of tawaaf.

We draw your attention to the fact that you have remained, and still remain, in a state of Ihram and are forbidden from matters that are forbidden for anyone who is in a state of ihram, including wearing perfume, having sexual intercourse, and other prohibitions related to being in ihram until you finish the referred to ‘Umrah.

Allah Knows best.
