Using Algerian expression ‘me and Allah’ to mean being alone

Question

Assalaamu alaykum, Scholars. Yesterday, when I entered my grandmother's home, I asked whether they were alone in the house (my grandmother and my aunt) or if there was any guest in the house. She said, “No, we are just the two of us (my granmother and my aunt) and Allah.” This is a typicall expression here in Algeria, which is said, for instance, when one is by himself and no one is with him. When he is asked who is with him, he replies, “Me and Allah.” What about this expression; is it haram to use it? When I heard it, I did not rejected it.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We do not see any harm with regard to the custom in your country about people saying ‘Allah is with us’ or ‘we are with Allah’ or similar expressions, as Allah is with His slaves; Allah says (what means):

· {There is in no private conversation three but that He is the fourth of them, nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them - and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing.} [Quran 58:7]

· {…and He is with you wherever you are. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing.} [Quran 57:4]

· {They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge]….} [Quran 4:108]

Also, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said in a long hadith, “…that a person knows that Allah is with him wherever he is.” [At-Tabaraani and Al-Bayhaqi]

Allah being with His Creation in the general sense means that He is with them with His Knowledge, His Sight, and His Hearing, and that He is Encompassing them; otherwise, Allah is established over His Throne, above the Heavens.

Allah knows best.
