Question: How many times did our Prophet Muhammad ( sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )) perform Hajj and Umrah?

Fatwa: All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad , is His slave and Messenger.
The Prophet Muhammad ( sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )) performed only one Hajj after his migration to Madinah and it was in the tenth year of Hijrah. Did he ever perform Hajj before his migration to Madeenah? The scholars hold various opinions concerning this issue, some of them assume that he performed Hajj twice before his migration, for the Hadeeth of Jabir who said that the Prophet performed three Hajj; two before migration and one after it, i.e. the farewell Hajj.
He performed Umrah four times. Anas relates that the Prophet said: "Allah's Apostle performed four 'Umras, all in the month of Dhul-Qa'da, except the one which he performed with his Hajj (i.e. in Dhul-Hijja). He performed one 'Umra from Al-Hudaibiya in Dhul-Qa'da, another 'Umra in the following year in Dhul Qa'da a third from Al-Jirana where he distributed the war booty of Hunain, in Dhul Qa'da, and the fourth 'Umra he performed was with his Hajj". Imam Ibn al-Qayyim said: 'All the four Umrahs were in the month of Dhul-Qa'da. The first was at the occasion of pledge of al-Hudaibiyah in the sixth year. The second was the next year of al-Hudaibiyah, the third was with his farewell Hajj and the fourth was when he performed from al-Jirana when he was returning from Hunain'. [Zad-al-Ma'ad]
