Fasting the first day of Muharram

27/12/2009| IslamWeb

Question:

Is fasting on the first day of Muharram allowed? Are there any supporting Hadith?

Fatwa:
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) is His Slave and Messenger.

Fasting the First day of Muharram is likeable as is fasting other days of this month.  The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: "The best fasting after Ramadan is the fasting in the Muharram month".
Al Nawawi may Allah have mercy upon him said: 'Our scholars say: and among the fasting that is desirable is the fasting of the four Hurum (forbidden) months: ‘Dhul Qida, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab and the best among them is Muharram'.
Allah Knows best.
