Question:

Assalamu alaikum, Our islamic leaders give thier vote to a communist in election of wakaf board chairman, and he is elected. What is your opinion about our leaders, I am not interesting to follow that leaders

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We do not understand what you mean by the Endowment Board, but if these are endowments for the Muslims, then it is not permissible to entrust a non-Muslim to run them; for more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 117022.

However, if this matter [endowment] is for all the people in your country –we mean for the Muslims and non-Muslims –and those Islamic leaders view that there is a preponderant benefit which can be achieved for the Muslims by electing that man, or that some evil will be repelled by him, then this is permissible.

In such matters you should take the case to the trustworthy scholars in your country because they are more aware about what would achieve benefits and repel harms.

For more benefit on participating in elections in non-Muslim counties and on what basis the participation should be, please refer to Fatwa 84199.

Moreover, we do not know what you mean by not willing to follow them; in any case, if the trustworthy scholars are of the view that this matter may achieve a benefit for the Muslims, then you should not disobey them in this matter, and the Muslims should not disunite because of that, because Islam advocated unity and prohibited disunion, and there is no doubt that you are most in need for this unity.

Allaah Knows best.
