Her name is Risma

Question:

asalaamualaikum Dear mufti saab.my dad had kept my name risma and on my birth certificate it is writen as richma people call me by both names , but i can not find a good meaning to my name does that mean my name is meaningless ,my worry is mufti saab is what name will Allah call me by on the day of judgement.i wanted to change it but it was kept by my dear father who has passed away now.should i change my name??or was my name given by Allah ta'la ?would you know any meaning to my name if there is please would you kindly tell me.jazakallahu khair.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

 

We did not find any source for the name Risma in the Arabic language and we do not know any meaning of it. It appears that it is a non-Arabic name. We have already issued Fatwa 127404 clarifying that it is permissible to be named with non-Arabic names if they do not include a meaning that is contrary to the Sharee’ah.

However, if its meaning is unknown, then it is better to avoid it and if one is already named with it, it is better to change it. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 88621.
