The irritation of having a smoker in the family

10-4-2014 | IslamWeb

Question:

Salam, My uncle is a smoker, but he quitted for one year and came back to it.He has been told by my family and I to stop again, yet he doesn’t listen. He at times smokes inside the garage which I don’t like, because the smell of the cigarette comes inside the house.I told my family to tell him to smoke outside far away from the house, however they seem they don’t exactly care about it and don’t understand the importance of our health. My aunt said to me to not go near the smell and said that we all will die;meaning not to worry about the smell of the cigarette and we die when Allah wants us to die.My grandma told me to leave him alone, because he has problems with his wife and has to take care of his kids.I would like an advise from you to please tell me what I should do,because I cannot stand to stay inside the house for hours.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we ask Allaah to help you in your affliction and we advise you to be gentle with your uncle and advise him in a kind manner; perhaps he will respond and give up smoking, or at least smoke away from you so as not to cause you any harm.

If you can seek the help of those who can influence him, like your father or uncles, for instance, then this is good and you may show them some books or videos about the danger of passive smoking and its harmful effects to health. This may encourage them to insist that your uncle smoke away from you. For more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 81589 and 92653.

You should also pray to Allaah to make your uncle hate smoking and protect you from the harms of his smoking.

Allaah Knows best.
