Licking wet lips while fasting

Question:

Assalaamu alaykum. You mentioned in an Arabic fatwa - if I am not mistaken - something along the lines that if a person licks his lips and then licks his (wet) lips again, his fast is broken because he took back in his saliva from his lips and swallowed it, which therefore nullifies his fast. Does the same thing apply in the prayer (i.e. if he does this, is his prayer broken)? I hope to receive clarification soon, Allah willing. May Allah reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The mere licking of the lips, even if they are wet with saliva or moist, does not break the fast; rather, what breaks the fast is to intentionally bring the saliva out of the mouth and into it again and then swallow it. So if one deliberately brings out the saliva to the outside of the lips and then swallows it, his fast is broken by doing so.

As for what you mentioned in your question, it does not invalidate the fast. Please refer to fatwas 176503 and 185033.

In case where swallowing the saliva breaks the fast, it invalidates the prayer as well if it is done during the prayer because it is similar to eating and drinking intentionally, as stated by many scholars of Fiqh.

Allah knows best.
