Question:

Does washing the hands up to the elbows in Wudhoo’ (ablution) include washing the two palms? May Allaah Reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Washing the palms while one washes his arms up to the elbows in Wudhoo’ is obligatory because they are included in the name “forearms”. Talking about the palm and fingers, Ibn Al-‘Arabi may Allaah have mercy upon him a Maaliki scholar, said: "They are to be washed twice in Wudhoo’, one at the beginning of Wudhoo’ and this is recommended and one during Wudhoo’ and this is obligatory."

In Al-Mughni, Ibn Qudaamah may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "Washing the arms includes washing the forearms up to two elbows as well as the two palms. The scholars unanimously agree on this, since it is commanded by Allaah in the verse in which He Says (what means): {…..and your forearms to the elbows…} [Quran 5: 6]."

Allaah Knows best.
