Ruling of Mizmar and Musical Instruments

Question:

Q1- I heard a hadith that using mizmur instrument during the time of happiness is cursed in Islam. I wanted to ask is this true?Q2- If this hadith is true then is trumpet or flute are also haram in Islam and if we listen to any music which contain flute or any wind instruments listening to it would be cursed even if I am listening to my self or is mizmur only cursed in islam?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, ﷺ, is His slave and Messenger.

Perhaps you mean the hadith reported by al-Bazzar in his Musnad, on the authority of Anas ibn Malik who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Two sounds are cursed in this world and the Hereafter: a woodwind instrument at a time of blessing, and a wailing cry at a time of calamity.”

This is a hadith whose authentication is disputed among the scholars of hadith, some grading it sound and others weak.

This hadith serves as evidence for the prohibition of the woodwind instrument (mizmar). Likewise, according to the majority of scholars, the flute (nay), the trumpet (buq), and similar musical instruments are also forbidden.

This applies whether the person listening to them is alone or with others; the prohibition pertains to the use of the instrument and listening to it, regardless of whether the listener is alone or accompanied by others.
