The effect of the discharge from the eye on Wudhoo’ and Ghusl

Question:

Does leaving the discharge from the eye – which is normally gathered in the eye, especially after waking up – render Wudhoo’ (ablution) and Ghusl (shower taken when in a state of major ritual impurity) invalid?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

If what is meant by the discharge from the eye is the white discharge of the eye, then this does not affect the validity of Wudhoo’ or Ghusl, unless there is a large amount which crusts and prevents water from reaching the skin. In the latter case, it is considered a separating medium and this renders Wudhoo’ and Ghusl invalid.

Allaah Knows best.
