Question:

Someone made a vow to slaughter an animal every year for the sake of Allaah Almighty. 'Eed Al-Adh-ha is approaching. Is it permissible for him to slaughter one animal as Udh-hiyah (sacrificial animal) and fulfillment of his vow?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

The fulfillment of a vow is obligatory, whereas the Udh-hiyah is a confirmed act of Sunnah, according to the majority of scholars. So, slaughtering one animal is not sufficient for both purposes. Rather, two animals should be slaughtered, for each of them is a separate act that should be carried out separately. According to the basic rule, a separate animal is to be slaughtered for each of the two acts.

Allaah Knows best.
