Question:

I am planing to perform Hajj with my husband (Hajj Tamattu). Do we both have to sacrifice or only my husband?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If a husband and wife perform Hajj Tamattu’ (performing ‘Umrah in the Hajj season and then performing Hajj in the same year) then it is obligatory upon both the husband and wife to sacrifice an animal. Only one sacrifice would not be sufficient for both. Allah Says (what means): {And when you are secure, then whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals.} [Quran 2:196]

If one could not sacrifice, then he/she has to fast as mentioned in the same verse: {And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.} [Quran 2:196]

Allah knows best.
