Compelled to take pills during Ramadan daytime

16-12-2003 | IslamWeb

Question:

I have witnessed brothers who are mostly refugees from Ethiopia and Somalia resettling in USA being made to break their fast so that they can swallow preventive malarial tablets. What is the ruling regarding this disturbing deed?

Answer:

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. If these brothers were compelled to take these pills during Ramadan daytime and if not taking such pills can delay the cure or make the disease more severe, then it is lawful. But, in this case, the person makes up for missed day(s). Allah knows best.
