Divorced by her husband she wants Allaah to be pleased with her

Question:

When I was in Iddah divorce my ex-husband asked me to leave his house. He used to beat me, so I finished by hating his awful behaviour. I left home. After a while he made many alternatives to reconcile with me but I couldn't imagine living with him again so I refused any reconciliation. Now he got married again. Although I've never wanted to be with him again, I've always felt that I haven't pleased Allaah. Could you advice me?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is not permissible for a husband to force his divorced wife out until the end of her waiting period, and it is not permissible for her as well to go out of her husband's home until the end of this period. Allaah says (which means): {…and turn them not out of their (husband's) homes, nor shall they (themselves) leave,…}[Qur'an 65:1]. However, if it is your husband who forced you out and you left to avoid any harm, then we hope that you are not sinful.

As regards your husband taking you back, then if it is a revocable divorce, then the jurists may Allaah have mercy upon them are of the view that your husband can take you back provided you are still in the waiting period, but if you refuse to go back to him to avoid his mistreatment and the damage and the harm he is causing to you, then again we hope that you are not sinful. So you should not worry about this and continue your life as normal. However, if this man asks you again for marriage and you know that he became righteous, or any other religious man with a good moral character asks your hand for marriage, then in such a case you should not refuse to get married.

Allaah knows best.
