Blood donation to a person does not render him/her a Mahram

Question:

Is donating blood allowed in Islam? If blood donated, will he/she become ones Mahram (like we have 4 the milk)?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We have already issued Fataawa 82197 and 87533 clarifying the ruling on donating blood, so please refer to them.

As regards whether a person becomes a Mahram (i.e. non-marriageable relative) to someone who donated blood to him or to whom he gave blood, then this does not render him a Mahram to the other person. The text that is stated which renders a person a Maharam to another is by suckling and not by donating blood. It is not correct to draw an analogy between blood and milk; the blood is not by itself nutritious rather it transmits nutrition but the milk is by itself nutritious.

Allaah Knows best.
