Do not read newspapers in the toilet

Question:

I want to ask about taking newspapers into the toilet for reading as they might contain the Quran or a mention of Allaah in any subject, is this forbidden as my husband loves doing so?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

One should not take newspapers into the toilet for reading, as a Muslim is required not to take anything which contains the mention of Allaah into the toilet. It is confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to take off his ring on which ‘Muhammad, the Messenger of Allaah’ was engraved, when going to relieve himself. [Ahmad, Maalik and Ibn Hibbaan]  It is known that newspapers generally contain Quranic verses, Prophetic narrations, or the mention of Allaah. Furthermore, when a person is in the toilet, he is required to be quiet, and not read or speak, because it is more appropriate to come out of the toilet as soon as one relieves himself, as it is disliked to remain inside the toilet more than the necessary time.

Allaah Knows best.
