Question:

Salaam aleykoum,
i wanted to knowif it permissible to have a few women sing anasheed with duffs on my weddingday, regarding the fact that they ask money for it? I hear a lot of answers about this and I really want to know now. thank you very much.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Yes, it is permissible for women to sing in a wedding ceremony provided these songs do not include obscene words and are free from the use of musical instruments. As regards using the Duff (a tambourine-like instrument without bells), then this is permissible.

Therefore, if the singing of these women is as we have stated, then it is permissible -Allaah willing -to pay them. One of the conditions for the validity of paying wages or money to someone is that it should be on a permissible benefit. Ibn 'Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "It is permissible to pay money to the women who play the Duff, as this is a permissible work."

Allaah Knows best.
