Question:

Aslamu Alikum , Few days ago I was watching TV. A Hanfi Scholar said that it's not permissible to have name "Muhammad Asghar " because Asghar means "Small " so when we attach this name with Muhammad then there are chances of disrespect . So , It's better not have name Muhammad Asghar . I would like to read your opinion about it . Regards ALLAH HAFIZ May ALLAH bless all of you !

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The statement of the scholar whom you referred to in the question might be correct. In our view in Islamweb, it is more appropriate not to be named with these names but we can not say that this is forbidden. Those who give these names “Mohammad Asghar”, “Muhammad Abdus-Salaam” and “Muhammad 'Ali”, and similar names, mention the name Muhammad at the beginning seek blessings, and they do not do it to belittle or despise the name Muhammad. The second name Asghar, Abdus-Salaam, or 'Ali, is the real name of the person, and this is common among the people as we were informed by some people from that region where such compound names are commonly used.

Allaah Knows best.
