Groom accepting golden ornamental gifts from his bride’s relatives

Question

Asalam U Alikum Sheikh, I have a question, my brother got recently engaged and we have a custom here that the family of bridegroom sends gifts especially the golden ornamentals to the would be bride. I told my brother that it is unlawful for you to accept the golden ornamentals as the gift, but he told me that he is not going to wear them, instead he will give it to his wife when she is married to him. I just want to know whether it is allowed for him to accept golden ornaments as gift even if he does not wears them and says that he is going to give it to his wife once she is married to him.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It appears from your question that you mean that it is the family of the bride who gives gifts to the family of the bridegroom; if this is the case, then it is permissible for the bridegroom to accept those golden ornamentals as gifts. The fact that it is forbidden for him to wear it, does not mean that it is not permissible for him to take it, possess it and benefit from it in permissible fields, whether by giving it to his wife to wear it or selling it, and the like.

Allaah Knows best.
