Question
Five years ago, my husband drank wine during the daytime of Ramadan and did not make up for that day. What should he do? How should he expiate for his sin? He did so only on one day after which he completed his fasts. However, he does drink wine outside the month of Ramadan. Please supplicate Allah to guide him and make him give up this sin.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
We ask Allah to guide your husband. No doubt, drinking wine is one of the destructive major sins, we seek refuge in Allah. The Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, “Avoid wine because it is the key to all evils.” [Al-Hakim and Al-Bayhaqi on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbaas 
; and rendered saheeh (authentic) by As-Suyooti]
The Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, further said, “The wine addict is like an idol worshipper.” [Abu Nu‘aym, and rendered saheeh by As-Suyooti]
The Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, also said, "Allah, the Almighty, has forbidden Paradise to three (types of men): the wine addict, the one who is undutiful to his parents, and the cuckold who accepts the immorality of his womenfolk." [Ahmad]
The Hadeeths in condemning wine and its drinkers are many. Sufficient for its drinker is that he incurs upon himself the curse of Allah, the Almighty. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, cursed ten related with wine, including its drinker. So we call upon this man to repent with sincere repentance before a day shall come on which there is no repelling from Allah.
Without a doubt, the sin of breaking the fast intentionally during the daytime of Ramadan is very grave, and it is aggravated when one does so with wine, whose drinker is cursed; we ask Allah for safety from sin.
It is due on this man to repent to Allah from the sin of breaking the fast intentionally, make up for that day on which he broke the fast, and feed a poor person because he delayed the obligatory fast while he had the ability to do it all this time. However, no feeding is due on him if he was ignorant of the fact that it is forbidden to delay making up for the fast till the advent of the next Ramadan.
