Fatwa CenterShe attained purity before Fajr, but performed Ghusl after Fajr
Question
If a woman attains purity from her menstruation and performs Ghusl (ritual bathing) after the Fajr prayer time then prays and fasts, should she make up for that day?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alyhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger. Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen Allaah Knows best.
said: "If the purity was attained before dawn, even if one minute beforehand, and she was sure that she had attained purity, then she should fast on that day if this is during the month of Ramadan. Her fast on that day would be valid and she does not have to make up for it as she is fasting while being pure, even if she performs her Ghusl after the time for Fajr has begun. This ruling is the same as that for men in a state of Janaabah (post-sexual-intercourse impurity) due to having sexual intercourse or experiencing a wet dream, and they can have Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal), then perform Ghusl after the time for Fajr has begun. In both cases, fasting is valid. It is worthy to note here that some women think that to begin menstruating after breaking their fast after Maghrib and before the ‘Ishaa’ prayer invalidates their fast of that day, but this is not true. Even if the menstruation starts a moment after sunset, the fasting is valid and complete."
