Entering the bathroom with coins that bear the name of Allaah

Question

Some currencies bear phrases like ‘none is truly worthy of worship but Allaah’. Is it permissible for one to enter the bathroom carrying such currencies in his pocket? Does the same ruling apply to pieces of paper on which some verses of the Quran are written? Thank you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Indeed, revering the Name of Allaah The Exalted is an aspect of revering Allaah The Exalted Himself, and it is a respectful gesture is not to enter an impure place such as the bathroom with what bears the Name of Allaah The Exalted. Allaah The Exalted Says (what means): {That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allaah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.} [Quran 22:32]

Hence, it is impermissible to carry those coins or scraps of paper that bear the Name of Allaah The Exalted along with you into the bathroom unless you fear that they will be stolen or lost if you leave them outside the bathroom. They should be put inside a pocket or hidden. Furthermore, one can empty his pockets from all scraps of paper which bear the name of Allaah The Exalted that are not needed except for coins and money that is necessary.

Allaah Knows best.
