Non-fasting person committed indecent act in Ramadaan

Question

Assalam alikumI am in deep despair, I have committed a grave sin during Ramadan. I have committed sexual relations with my unmarried partner (although no intercourse). I am unable to fast due to long-term ill health so I have been feeding a person who is fasting every day instead. I want to know if I also have to pay khaafar (feed 60 poor people) for my terrible sin during Ramadan, even though I was not fasting, and if I have to how much do I need to pay. I want to know how I can seek repentance from Allah for my immoral conduct. Please advise me. I am a convert and sometimes I feel so lost and disliked for my faith, I am feeling weak imaan because of the treatment I receive. Please help me.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His Slave and Messenger.

You must turn back to Allaah, repent from that sin and regret committing it. If your illness is incurable, you are obliged to feed a poor person for each day of fasting you fail to observe. However, if you illness is curable, you are obliged to make up for the fast days you miss. Allaah The Exalted says (what means): {And as for those who can fast with difficulty, (e.g. an old man, etc.), they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a Miskeen (poor person) (for every day)…} [Quran 2:184]

You are not obliged, however, to offer the Kaffaarah (expiation) for the sin you have committed. Rather, you only have to repent for it. Please refer to fatwa 86527.

You should devotedly adhere to the Islamic teachings and never allow people’s aversion to get in the way of observing your religion. Instead. You are advised to treat them kindly, highlight the merits and beauty of Islam for them, and call them to Allaah with wisdom and kindness.

For more benefit, please refer to fataawa 85275and 83931.

Finally, we implore Allaah to bless you to you attain all that is good.

Allaah Knows best.
