Question
Assalaamu alaykum. I have a question about social media. If a female 'likes' pictures of other females who expose and adorn themselves publicly, is that considered supporting their immorality? Would it be sinful for the person to 'like' the picture? Would this count as promoting immorality? (Previous fatwas do not cover this subject.) May Allaah reward you.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
It is prohibited for the woman to expose her adornment on such media. She should be admonished and reminded of Allah, The Almighty, reviving her fear of Him. Tameem Ad-Daari, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, "The religion is (built on the exchange of sincere) advice." People asked, "To whom?" The Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, replied, "To Allah, to His Book, to His Messenger, to the leaders of the Muslims, and to the common folk." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
One of the most important purposes of advice is deterring the recipient of the advice from sinning. There is no doubt that when the person "likes" such pictures, he is doing the exact opposite of 'giving advice'. It also constitutes an approval and acceptance of that sin and encourages the woman to carry on committing it. This may lead to the promotion of immoral acts, because exposing her beauty and adornment as such before people may lead to falling into the abyss of immorality and adultery. Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, "Prescribed for the son of Aadam (Adam) is his portion of zina (fornication/adultery) which he must inevitably acquire. The zina of the eyes is the glance. The zina of the ears is listening. The zina of the tongue is speech. The zina of the hand is the grasp. The zina of the foot is the step. The heart yearns and desires. The genitals then either confirm this or deny it." [Muslim]
