Neglecting the Hijab constitutes imitating the Jews and Christians

Question

Why do girls wear seductive clothing these days? What is their status in the religion? Did this happen in the past?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Muslims girls are forbidden to follow the Jews' and Christians' traditions in exposing their beauty and body parts that they are disallowed to show in front of non-Mahram (permanently unmarriageable) men, by wearing short, transparent or tight-fitting clothes. Allaah Almighty has made it mandatory for Muslim women to cover the ‘Awrah (body parts that must be covered) and not to expose it except in front of their husbands and Mahram men. Allaah Almighty says (what means):

• {And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their head covers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons.} [Quran 24: 31]

• {O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused.} [Quran 33: 59]

Furthermore, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said:

There are two types of the people of Hell that I have not seen yet: …and women who are clothed yet naked, walking with an enticing gait, with something on their heads that looks like the humps of camels leaning to one side. They will never enter Paradise or even smell its fragrance although its fragrance can be smelt from such and such a distance. [Muslim]

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, also forbade imitating the polytheists, saying:

• "Whoever imitates others than us does not belong to us. Do not imitate the Jews or the Christians." [At-Tirmithi; Al-Albani: good]

• "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." [Ahmad and Abu Daawood; Al-Albani: good]

These evil deeds did not occur in the past when the role models and leaders of the Muslims, the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, were present. This is supported by the following two incidents.

• It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her said: "May Allaah have mercy upon the early migrant women. When Allaah revealed (what means): {and to wrap [a portion of] their head covers over their chests} [Quran 24:31], they tore the edges of their waist sheets and covered their heads with them." [Al-Bukhari]

• It was narrated that Umm Salamah may Allaah be pleased with her said: "When the verse (which means): "to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments…" was revealed, the women of the Ansaar covered themselves entirely with (black) garments and went about looking like crows were perched on their heads." [Abu Daawood; Al-Albani: authentic]

Having said this, we call upon the religious male and female youths to put forth their best efforts to spread the teachings of Islam, its noble morals, and virtuous values among other youths.

We ask Allaah to guide all Muslims, males and females, to the straight path.

Allaah Knows best.
