Drinking in copper vessels

Question

What is the Islamic ruling regarding using copper vessels to drink water? Is it permissible or impermissible?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible to use copper vessels for drinking or for any other purpose. The prohibition in this regard is confined to the vessels made of gold or silver, as has been reported in the authentic ahaadeeth. The Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, “Do not wear silk and brocade nor eat or drink in utensils made of gold and silver; these are meant for them (disbelievers) in this world and for us in the Hereafter.” [Al-Bukaahri and Muslim] This wording was cited in Saheeh Al-Bukhaari.

Ibn Qudaamah may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote after mentioning the prohibition of eating or drinking in utensils made of gold or silver, “As for the rest of the utensils, it is lawful to use them regardless of whether they are made of precious materials, such as rubies, crystal, cornelian, gold, and shaped glass, or invaluable materials, such as wood, pottery, or leather. It is not disliked to use any of them according to the opinion of scholars.” [Al-Mughni]

Allah knows best.
