A Hadeeth by Shahr ibn Hawshab

Question

Aslam Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatahu. Someone said that the hadith of not having a beard in jannah is not authentic because of Sharh bin Hawshab, what are your opinions? If it is authentic can you give me a more precise and detailed answer, kindly?Jazakhallahun Khayran

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Shahr ibn Hawshab was not the only narrator who narrated this Hadeeth. Rather, At-Tabaraani and Al-Bukhari (in his book At-Taareekh) reported it from Haroon ibn Ri'aab from Anas, but it was said that Haroon did not hear it from Anas.

'Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jad’aan also narrated it from Abu Hurayrah, but there are some criticisms about 'Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jad’aan, and it was reported by Ahmad and others.

At-Tabaraani also reported it in his book Al-Kabeer from Miqdaam and one of its narrators was Yazeed ibn Sinan.

Besides, it was narrated by Ahmad and At-Tirmithi and others from Shahr ibn Hawshab from Abu Hurayrah.

Hence, it becomes clear that Shahr ibn Hawshab was not the only narrator who narrated it.

Even though there are some criticisms about all the chains of narrators who narrated this Hadeeth, but since it was narrated by many narrators, then this strengthens the Hadeeth, and that is why Shaykh Al-Albaani and Shaykh Al-Arna'oot both classified it as Hasan [Good]. [You may refer to the review of Al-Musnad by Shu’ayb Al-Arna’oot about this Hadeeth.]

Allah knows best.
