Drawing Images without The Eyes, Nose and Mouth

Question

Assalamu'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Is it permissible to draw animate beings from top down perspective where eyes, nose and mouth are not shown?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The principle ruling regarding drawing animate objects is that it is impermissible, provided the image drawn is of the full object. This is referring to an image which none of its vitals parts is missing (i.e., parts of the body without which the being cannot remain alive, like the head, the chest and so on).

However, because of an overwhelming benefit, we hold the opinion that it is permissible to draw cartoons, even if it is in its full image, for a considerable reason like teaching children, calling people to Allah, calling people to virtue, teaching people the principles of Islam, and the like.

As for images that do not have the eye, nose or mouth, then these are not included in the prohibited images according to some scholars. Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said: “If the image is not clear, meaning: it does not have the eye, nose, mouth and the fingers, then it is not a complete image, and it is not considered to be competing with the creation of Allah the Almighty.” [End of quote]

Therefore, there is no problem in drawing such images.

Allah knows best.
