The Part Of Salary That Is Equivalent To The Negligence Time Is Haram

Question

Salamu aleykum. Does not doing 100% at work or often being lazy or not knowing every area that you're required to know at work make your income haram? I know someone who graduated from pharmacy school and she worked for more than one year and did have time to look things up but she's worried that her lack of energy might have made her money unjustly recieved. She gets a fixed salary every month (before it was a certain amount per hour). I hope this could be enough information for you inshaAllah. JazzakAllahu Kheiran.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

As long as this woman carries out the work duties required of her, her salary is lawful, whether it is fixed or calculated according to the number of working hours.

If she is negligent in performing the work required of her, then a portion of her salary that is proportionate to her negligence is haram to her, unless the employer pardons her negligence.

An employee should be diligent in performing his work to the best of his ability while being cautious of laxness and neglect as well as of immoderation and obsessiveness.

Allah Knows best.
