Wants to Fear Allah More and Hope for His Mercy

Question

Assalamalkam I’m struggling to fear Allah the Almighty properly I think. I pray, fast, try to read Qur’an and Hadith everyday, but some sins I have trouble leaving and I have trouble imaging the day of resurrection and the getting scared of Allah the Almighty’s punishment. Likewise I struggle longing for paradise I know I want to go there and be saved from hellfire but I struggle with these things. I feel my faith and taqwa is weak. What shall I do? Please refrain from sending me to read other fatwa as I want a specific fatwa for my situation. Jazakallah Khair

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

What you said that you suffer from fear and long for Paradise is not clear to us. If what is meant is that you feel the lack of these heart actions, then the solution is to learn Islamic knowledge and frequently recite the verses that give glad tidings of Paradise and warn of the punishment of Hellfire, and know their interpretation. This will make you more fearful of Allah and hope more in His Mercy.

What will also help you in this is to read the biography of the righteous predecessors who feared the punishment of Allah and hoped for His Forgiveness and Mercy.

You should often supplicate Allah, remember Him, seek His Help and devotedly supplicate Him to help you perfect these good qualities. You should very frequently ponder over the Names and Attributes of the Most High, and fill your heart with this, as this will make you earn the love of Allah, fearing Him and hoping in His Mercy.

If what you mean is something else, then please clarify it to us.

Allah knows best.
