Ruling on a statue that has no head

Question

Assalamu alaikum I’m a 19 year old revert and I’m still confused on the rulings on statues and drawings. I know if it imitates life it’s haram. For a wedding gift for my friend I got him a 3D hand casting kit as both him and his soon to be wife are very sentimental. You hold hands with someone and dip them into some form of alginate to create a mold. This mold is then filled with plaster of Paris and you’re left a clay form of the hands. Here’s an example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0847995GQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_04P7SCV83VV8XWYWXE6V?_encoding=UTF8

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We ask Allah, the Almighty, to keep you steadfast on the Right Path.

If the statue that you have has two hands only and not the entire body, then it is not included in the pictures prohibited by the Sharee'ah, since the picture that has no head is not prohibited. In his Al-Mughni, Ibn Qudaamah may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “If the head is cut off (from the picture), then there is no dislikeability.

Ibn ʿAbbaas may Allaah be pleased with him said, “The picture is nothing but the head; so if the head is removed, it is no longer considered a picture.” This opinion is narrated on the authority of ʿIkrimah.

Abu Hurayrah may Allaah have mercy upon him narrated that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said, “Gabriel came to me and said, “I came to you last night and was prevented from entering simply by the fact that there were images at the door, for there was a figured curtain with images on it and there was a dog in the house. So order that the head of the image which is at the door of the house be cut off so that it may become like the form of a tree; order that the curtain be cut up and made into two cushions spread out on which people may tread; and order that the dog be put out.” Allah’s messenger then did so.” [This Hadith is narrated by Abu Dawood, At-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh]

Allah knows best.
