Zakah on money received for support

Question

I don't have a job, but I have a wife and a child. We are being supported by our families and friends. Do I have to pay Zakah from the money that we get for ourselves??

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

Know that a property you received from your family as a gift, donation or charity, becomes your own property and you are free to use it on your behalf. It is also subject to Zakah if it equals to the value of 85 grams of gold, i.e. when it constitutes a Nisaab; if it remains in your possession for one complete Hawl (lunar year).
Here, you have to fix the start date of your Hawl to the Nisaab of your wealth, that equal, 85 grams of gold and more.
Thus, at the end of your Hawl on your Nisaab, you have to calculate your wealth and pay 2.5 percentages as long as your wealth equals the value of 85 grams of gold; otherwise, you are not required to pay Zakah, i.e. if the above -two conditions are not met.
Allah knows best.
