Wants to Wear Islamic Dress But Parents Disagree

Question

I'm 20 years old; I study in university. My problem is that I want to put on the Islamic clothes but my family disagrees with me. They tell me that I'll have difficulty finding a job and to get married. My parents are old persons and I'm the youngest. My brothers are all married. My parents want to see me in a good situation and they think that if I put on the scarf and Islamic clothes I'll have a lot of problems in my life. Actually, I don't care; I just want to do what God asks me to do. Sometimes I find that my parents are right, other times no. I need you to help me please.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is your duty to wear the Islamic Hijaab, since it is an obligation for every Muslim female.

Allah Says (what means):

• {O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.} [Quran 33:59]

• {And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.} [Quran 33: 53]

So, it is forbidden to obey your parents in this concern; i.e. to take off your Hijaab which is an indication of your chastity.

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “There should be no obedience to a human being if such an obedience constitutes disobedience to the Creator.” [Ahmad and as-Suyooti, and others classified it as sound]

Furthermore, your parents' opinion is not correct since whoever fears Allah and obeys Him, He will make for him each and every difficulty easy and He will provide him from resources he does not expect. So, adherence to Islam gives one a better situation and better future.

We pray to Allah, The Exalted, to help all of us be steady on the upright path.
