Fatwa CenterConsummated marriage but doubtful about menses
Question
I had my menses before my wedding night and ended on the day of my wedding in the morning, but before the relation with my husband at night I found yellow discoloration. My regular days for menstruation is maximum 7 days and I do not remember if this was the 7th or 8th day. We had sexual relation. Did I do something wrong and if so, how can I ask Allah for forgiveness?
Answer
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. The yellow discharge that you have observed was after being clean from your period then it is not considered as menstruation. So, your husband may have sex with you while having such discharge. Know that the cleanness from the period is known through two ways. A. Dryness of the vagina; if a woman enters some cotton or the like in her vagina and does not find any trace of blood that means her period has ended. B. When a woman sees that her sanitary napkin is clean. If the yellow discharge began before her period then it is considered as part of the menses. In this case, having sexual relations is forbidden. If happens to have sex with you in this situation, then you should both repent to Allah. For details about repentance read Fatwa: 81467. This rule is based on the Hadith reported by Umm Atiyyah (Radiya Allahu Anha) who said: After we were pure, we did not consider the yellow or muddy discharge to be anything . [ Abu Dawood ].
