Sacrificing in the name of the dead

Question

This is regarding the sacrifice of animals. Is it permissible to sacrifice animals in the name of dead? My father has expired. Can I perform sacrifice in his name?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

Slaughtering an animal for Eid is Sunnah on persons who are alive.

However, if the dead person made a will which should not exceed a third of his wealth, or set it as his endowment, then his requirements have to be fulfilled.

If the dead person did not make a will or set an endowment for this, and some of his relatives or other people wants to sacrifice on his behalf, then it is something good, and this is considered as giving Sadaqah (alms) on the dead.

It is not a requirement that the sacrifice be dedicated to only one dead person. In fact, it could be dedicated to many dead persons, or to living and dead persons of the family of the person who is slaughtering for them.

It is also permissible for someone who wants to slaughter a sheep as sacrifice for the dead, to give the money of the sacrifice as Sadaqah intending that its reward reaches the dead. This could be more appropriate.

Unless the wish of the dead person is to have a member of his family slaughter a sheep as sacrifice on his behalf, in such case, it becomes more appropriate to fulfill it.

By doing so, one is being kind to the dead person by fulfilling his will.

Allah knows best.
