Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

A Muslim is required to observe two important issues:

1) Steadfastness upon his Religion and being cautious not to deviate from it.

2) Inviting others to this great Religion (Islam).

A Muslim, who is not well-informed in the Islamic legislation (Sharee'ah), must beware reading such things, for he may go astray from his religion. Therefore, he must not take them. If he finds them, he has to burn or tear them up.

Imaam Ahmad, may Allaah have mercy on him, reported from Jaabir that Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab may Allaah be pleased with him brought to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) a piece of paper (a scroll, a parchment or the like) which he had gotten from the People of the Book (i.e. Jews and Christians). Upon reading it, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) got angry and said, "Are you still doubtful, O Ibn Al-Khattaab? By the One (Allaah) in whose hand is my soul, I have been sent to you with a pure and clear (Message/ i.e. Islam)."

Some of the things worth mentioning to avoid being misguided by such people are:

1- Avoid the causes of misguidance, such as living in non-Muslim countries without a pressing need.

2- Acquire enough knowledge in the Qur'aan and the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) in order to face such misconceptions and temptations.

3- Refer to the books which include refutations to the enemies' misconceptions, especially those written by previous scholars like Ibn Taymiyyah's 'Al-Jawaab As-Saheeh' and Ibn Al-Qayyim’s 'Hidaayatul Hayaara', and contemporary people.

4- Self-purification by performing acts of obedience, and shunning all acts of disobedience, for once faith is instilled in one's heart, the fruit is piety.

5- Invite to the Way of Allaah with wisdom and beautiful preaching, in cooperation with Islamic associations and centers.

Allaah knows best.
