Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

You have to know that what has befallen you is a kind of affliction and trial and that has been predestined by Allaah who afflicts his servants so that a patient person will be distinguished from others. However, a believer has to patient about the hardship that befalls him and be pleased with whatever is predestined for him in order to console himself from the tribulation. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "The greatness of the reward stems from the greatness of the affliction; if Allaah loves a people, He tries them. So, whoever is pleased (with such distress and calamity) will get the reward of being content and whoever is angry and dissatisfied, will get the punishment of being discontent." [At-Tirmithi]

It might be that what had befallen you is because of a sin that you had committed or due to your negligence in being grateful to Allaah for the bounties and blessings that He has given you. Allaah says (which means): {And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.}[42: 30]. So you have to take the initiative to repent sincerely and seek forgiveness from every sin. You have to be thankful to Allaah about what had befallen you, as this is at the same time a warning and admonition to you as well as a way to eradicate your sins. It might also be that the calamity that struck you is due to magic or the like, so if you are sure that it is magic then seek the legislated Ruqyah (to have some Qur'aanic verses and Prophetic supplications read on you). As regards amulets which contain Qur'an, then that is a controversial matter among the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them. Our opinion here in Islamweb is that they are not permissible because of saying of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ): "Incantations, amulets and bewitchment (in order to make the husband increase his love towards his wife) are Shirk." [Abu Daawood] Finally, we remind you that it is not permissible to accuse a specific person or a given family of having done magic to you without evidence.

As regards the advice of your friend to go and visit the grave of your father to ask forgiveness from him, this is something that has no foundation in religion. On the contrary, you should supplicate as much as possible to Allaah to forgive him if he is a Muslim, especially if you were negligent in his regard, and repent from being negligent and undutiful to him.

Allaah knows best.
