Question
My problem is with my wife, she left home because she said that she can't stand life with me because I am too harsh with her and because I put her in prison by not allowing her to go to her mum and dad and her sisters, she don't want to return to me now because she said before I went to mosque with her brothers and other witnesses and I swear that I am not going to insult or say bad words to her. I am really feeling guilty and can't sleep all the night because I think about her and my two sons who are young and they love and I do love them as well. The problem is that she doesn't trust me any more and she doesn't want to listen to anyone, because as she says and she is right to say that I keep saying that but then I will do the same thing. I am really feeling guilty of what I did but I still want my wife and I am praying Allaah but I feel that my Du'a is not answered by Allaah, because I am not a trusty person. Can you please give me advice on what I suppose to do now I really love my wife and I can't live without her, but she keeps saying that you will forget about me? Please give me an answer to this matter.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
We have mentioned in many Fataawa that being patient with one's spouse, dealing kindly and softly, overlooking mistakes and cooperating with each other in marital matters are the basic elements of a happy life. See our Fataawa 85312, 87501, 89180 and 88304.
Now, we advise you to try your best to convince your wife that you no longer will be unfair with her and that you will respect her. You may seek the help of those who can exhort her and advise her to change her mind for the sake of her children.
