Ruling on being alone in a car with a non-Mahram woman

Question

Being in seclusion with a woman in a car, is it considered as forbidden seclusion in our days?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

A group of scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them issued a Fatwa that it is not permissible for a woman to get in a car on her own with a driver who is a marriageable man to her, as this takes the same ruling as being in seclusion with him. However, if she gets in a car along with another woman when the situation is not suspicious, then this is permissible as this negates being in seclusion. Nonetheless, if it is a travel, then it is not permissible for her to travel except with her Mahram (i.e. a spouse or a person whom one is permanently prohibited from marrying due to sulking, marital or blood relations).

If one looks at the evil consequences that result from a woman being alone in a car with a non-Mahram driver, even inside the town, like the possibility of making an appointment with her, luring her, looking at her, touching her and so forth, he would definitely realize that this view is correct.

Allaah Knows best.
