Question

Who are the Mazdakists and who founded Mazdakism?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Mazdakism is attributed to Mazdak who was born in 487 in Nisabur, Iran. This movement calls to pornography and incites sexual desires. It does not respect family relations and moral standards, and it does not believe in any religion or belief. In sum, it is the origin of communism and the origin of the theory of Karl Marx. This movement stated that all people are born equal, and so, they should live in equity without any difference between them. They are of the view that the most important things in which the people should be equal and share between them are money and women.

Ash-Shahristaani may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'Muzdak allowed [fornication and adultery with] women and permitted money [illegal monetary transactions], and is of the view that people are co-partners in these mentioned things in the same way as they share the water, the fire, and grass.'

The youth, the rich and those who live in great luxury welcomed this call as it met their desires; this call was also supported by the rulers and the kings, until the Persian Empire sunk in moral anarchy and desires. Furthermore, Imaam At-Tabari may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'The vile, mean and despicable people seized this occasion and supported Mazdak and his followers; so the people were afflicted by them and these vile people became strong and powerful to an extent that they would enter to a man's house and abuse him and enjoy his women and wealth while he is unable to defend himself. They obliged the king to beautify what they were doing for the people otherwise they warned him to overthrow his government. Soon, the father did not know who is his son [because of the adultery they were committing] and the child did not know who is his [legal] father, and a man had no control over his own wealth.'

Allaah Knows best.
