The meaning of a person seeking forgiveness for what one commits unknowingly

Question

I read in the book Hisnul-Muslim (fortification of a Muslim) a supplication which reads: “O Allaah, I take refuge in You lest I should commit shirk [associating partners to Allaah] with You knowingly and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do unknowingly.”

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Seeking forgiveness is to ask the forgiveness of sins, that’s to say to ask Allaah to conceal them and overlook them; the origin of the word in Arabic is Ghufraan, which means cover/seal. The expression ‘may Allaah forgive you’ means may Allaah have mercy on the sinners.

The meaning of a person seeking forgiveness for what he does not know, is that he asks Allaah to forgive him what Allaah knows that he committed Shirk, while the person did not know that he committed shirk.

Allaah Knows best.
