The Hadeeth that the majority of people in Paradise are Al-Bulh

Question

What is the meaning of the Arabic word Al-Bulh in the Hadeeth in which the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam (may Allaah exalt his mention), said that the majority of the people of Paradise are Al-Bulh?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Hadeeth in question was narrated by Al-Bazzaar may Allaah have mercy upon him on the authority of Anas may Allaah be pleased with him. Al-‘Ajlooni, ‘Ali Al-Qaari and Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him judged it to be Dha‘eef (Weak).

There are different meanings of Al-Bulh as pointed out by scholars:

- Sahl At-Tustari may Allaah have mercy upon him: those who are preoccupied with performing Thikr (remembering and mentioning Allaah).

- Ibn Al-Atheer, may Allaah have mercy upon him: those who are preoccupied with the Hereafter to the extent that they are distracted from and ignorant about the matters of this world. It does not refer to insane people.

- Al-Qurtubi may Allaah have mercy upon him: those who do not experience the disobedience of Allaah The Almighty.

Allaah Knows best
