Sell car to pay for obligatory Hajj

Question

I have a car and would like to perform the Hajj. Should I sell it for this purpose? I save a sum of money enough for me to perform ‘Umrah every two years. But I could not save those sums to perform Hajj because I feel that I miss the Ka‘bah so much, and saving those sums for Hajj would take six years – and I could not wait this whole time without visiting the two Sanctuaries.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Unless this car is beyond your necessary need, it is not due on you to sell it to perform the obligatory Hajj. If you are unable to collect a sum of money enough for you to perform Hajj, then Hajj is not due on you. This is because Hajj is due only on one who can afford it. It is more appropriate to save the money that you spend in ‘Umrah for the obligatory Hajj.

Allaah Knows best.
